Listen to the African Cottonseed

Many years ago I wrote a paper for my Ph.D. program entitled, Tales of An African Cottonseed, narrated by a Cottonseed who is born in an African cotton field. The cottonseed is picked, cleaned, dyed, whitened, spun into threads and transported to America where she is turned into a pair of Levi jeans.  Blending in with all the other woven threads, one can hardly recognize the African Cottonseed anymore.

This simple story is an illustration of my own immigration to America, depicting how an immigrant often feels when they transplant themselves to America.  Suddenly, they are cleaned, dyed, whitened -stripped of their original identity, customs and rituals and converted into an American prototype.

Growing up in the Midwest I wanted nothing more than to disappear into the oblivion of middle America. Changing my accent, my clothes, my hair – my whole persona, I began to slowly lose my sense of self, shedding my authentic African cotton and replacing it with a labeled pair of American jeans.

In my private practice, I have worked with many immigrants (and non-immigrants) – who have developed eating disorders, mood disorders and other psychological issues – all in the name of fitting into American culture and becoming unidentifiable. It is my challenge to have them ‘listen’ to the African cottonseed, honoring their culture, customs, rituals and original sense of self.  If we all can maintain a sense of pride in where we come from and who we truly are, our country will become more a whole, tolerant and peaceful place.

Dr. Jenni’s novel “The Gossamer Thread” Links the Earthly Realm to the Spiritual.

In my novel, The Gossamer Thread, the anthropomorphic character Feather becomes the magical element, the divine component, the depth psychologist linking the earthly realm to the spiritual, the secular to the godly. Through her journey and poetic voice, I am able to bring forth much of what I do in my consulting room — question everything – including God (or as I call Her in the book – Source.)  Toggling back and forth from character to character, “tiktok video download” from past to present, from the earthly to the divine, the reader is pulled into this questioning and forced to ask themselves the same questions posed by Feather.  And in doing so, the reader becomes more than just a passive entity. They become active, dynamic, full of life and energy – toggling like the Feather herself, between the divine and earthly, between the past and present.  They become more brave, more bold, more willing to open themselves up to the unknown and risk making conscious, mindful choices.

Like Feather herself who heard the desperate cry for help from the rabbi in Auschwitz below and detached herself from her mother’s wing, we too must separate ourselves from that which appears comfortable and known. We too must trust that our calling on earth is more than just a blind following of those who came before, a hopeless monotony of mundane tasks that need daily completion. We must view the world with the eyes of a poet, the ears of a musician, loosening ourselves from the “known”, the “concrete”, the “daily newsfeed,” which blends and mixes together our human frailties in a seething cauldron of numbness and mechanical, technological activity. We must fall softly, listen tenderly and open our hearts delicately, dancing and floating effortlessly toward one another like the small yet intrepid character, Feather.

A client who came to me with symptoms of anxiety or depression was not just a “label” in the DSMIV, but a spiritual being disconnected from her true purpose or calling. Digging deeper, beyond the surface and into the world of the “depths” always provided me with truer insights about the client. Unearthing the client’s inner desires, naming and clarifying these needs, often dissipated the presenting symptoms, leading the client on a path of self-discovery, rather than a path of short-term resolution.

One begins to recognize that in treatment, a healer is not just a paid “expert” following a well-crafted treatment plan – they are more akin to a “witness” observing and assisting parched flowers in quenching their thirst, opening to the world and ultimately thriving. Unfortunately, our culture does not provide the necessary ingredients for the flower to independently blossom. Our society keeps us closed up, boxed in and hopelessly glued to our computer screens, our iphones, our Blackberries and television sets as a way of feeling connected and linked to the world.  However the more “plugged-in” we are to these boxes, the less we are able to feel the cool wind infusing the center of our beings, the lustrous sun warming our bodies and every particle of nature saturating our souls. Psychologists as “witnesses” thus become part of the essential elements needed to awaken our souls, to rouse and cultivate our collective cultural garden.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been drawn to the fantastical, the magical, the divine, the inexplicable — “the depths.” Staring at the pollen in a flower’s center, I never just saw pollen — I beheld a fairy’s enchanted dust that needed to be released into the world. I questioned, “Where did this magical powder come from? “Are these exquisite particles, like all elements in nature, part of a higher power’s (i.e. God’s) integral design?” Interacting with my childhood cat, I never just saw a cat—I witnessed an enlightened being that housed messages of wisdom and insight beyond anything that I encountered in the “real” world. I would ask, “Is this purring — God talking to me through the cat?”
